Worldwide Business- Across the Language Barriers
One of the most important issues for anyone wanting a successful
career in business is the learning of a second language. The main
problem is in deciding which language to learn. This is a difficult
subject and to help out we have listed some of the advantages offered
by a few of the world’s most popular languages.
Spanish
For North Americans the proximity of Latin America offers great
business possibilities. This is a huge region with lots of natural
resources and commercial potential. The best bit about it is that
with just one language you can communicate with just about everyone
in the area, with the Portuguese speakers of Brazil being the only
real heavyweights you will be missing. As a bonus, your new language
skills will also let you carry out commercial activity in Spain,
and the language’s international popularity means that it
is also a useful lingua
franca in many other cases.
French
A while back this was the language which international diplomats
and business people most commonly used. You might think that it
has fallen into decline since then but it still an official language
in 30 countries and is the second most studied second language in
the world. It is an official language of the UN and of a large number
of international companies too. If you plan a career which will
be spread over a wide geographical area then learning the French
language is a smart move. You can get by in parts of North Africa,
the Caribbean, Polynesia and Asia with this tongue. There are lots
of options for learning it in North America and the likes of French
classes in Charlotte, Boston, Washington and other US cities
will give you a good grounding.
English
We can’t forget the fact that many people live in North America
but find their career opportunities restricted by a less than perfect
grasp of English. While the other two languages mentioned are widely
used throughout the world there is little doubt that English is
the king of international business. If you asked business people
from across the world what they would choose if they could speak
just one language then the majority would choose English for commercial
reasons. Anyone who is already in the US or Canada has the advantage
of being immersed in the language. This together with some solid
English
lessons in Kansas City, for example, should be enough for
the world of international business to open up for them.
